Getting Started
What is AskTommi?
AskTommi is an AI-powered learning assistant designed specifically for children aged 6–18. Unlike general AI tools, Tommi is built to guide children towards answers rather than simply handing them over — building real understanding and independent thinking skills. Every session is monitored, so you always know what your child is learning.
Who is AskTommi for?
AskTommi is for families who want their children to get genuine learning support at home. It works well for homework help, revision, exploring new subjects, and building confidence — for children across all K–12 year groups, from age 6 up to 18.
What devices does AskTommi work on?
AskTommi works in any modern web browser on phones, tablets, and computers. No app download is required, although you can add it to your home screen on mobile for quick access.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — you can try AskTommi free for 7 days with no commitment. The trial includes up to 10 messages per day across general subjects. To unlock unlimited sessions, all subjects, and the full parent dashboard, you'll need a paid plan. See our pricing page for current plans and pricing.
Setting Up Your Children
How do I create a child profile?
Once you have a parent account, go to your Parent Dashboard and look for the "Add Child" option. You'll be asked to enter your child's name and age band — this is how Tommi knows what level to pitch its explanations at. Your child then picks their own interests during onboarding, so Tommi feels personal to them from the start.
How do I set a username and password for my child?
During the child profile setup you'll choose a username (something your child will remember — it can be a nickname or their first name) and set a password for them. Your child uses these credentials together with your parent email address to log in at the student login page.
How does my child log in?
Your child logs in at the Student Login page. They need three things: your parent email address, their username, and their password. You can share these with them directly — we recommend writing them down somewhere safe for younger children.
Can I have more than one child on my account?
Yes. Both the Individual and Family plans let you add multiple child profiles, each with their own username, password, settings, and insight dashboard. The Family plan gives you a discount compared to adding extra children to an Individual plan. You can upgrade your plan at any time from your account settings.
Can I change my child's username or password later?
Yes — you can update any child's username or password at any time from your Parent Dashboard by selecting the child's profile and choosing the edit option. Your child will need to use the new credentials next time they log in.
Can my child update their own preferences?
Yes. Children can update their own preferences — such as their interests and how they like Tommi to explain things — from within their account. They cannot change their username, password, or any parent-controlled settings.
Safety & Privacy
Is AskTommi safe for my child to use?
Yes. Every conversation is evaluated in real time by our safety systems. Content is filtered and calibrated to your child's age group. Tommi will not engage with requests that fall outside safe, educational boundaries, and blocked messages are flagged rather than silently ignored.
Can I see what my child has been asking?
The Parent Dashboard gives you full visibility into your child's learning activity — which subjects they've been exploring, how often they use Tommi, where they're succeeding, and where they're finding things difficult.
Can I control how much time my child spends on AskTommi?
Yes. You can set a daily message limit (a cap on how many messages your child can send in a day) and a session screen-time limit (how long they can use Tommi in a single sitting before a cooldown kicks in). If your child hits either limit, they'll be shown a friendly message explaining why they need to take a break.
What happens if my child tries to ask something inappropriate?
Tommi's instructions are built around staying within safe, educational boundaries. When a child asks about something outside that scope, Tommi gently declines and redirects them — either back to their learning or, for sensitive topics, towards a trusted adult. Before any response reaches your child, it is also checked against safety protocols to ensure what Tommi says is appropriate.
Understanding the Insights Dashboard
What is the Insights Dashboard?
The Insights Dashboard is your window into your child's learning activity. It pulls together data from every session your child has with Tommi and presents it as clear, parent-friendly panels. You can view activity for the past 7 days or 30 days, and switch between children if you have more than one profile.
What does "This week at a glance" show?
This panel gives you three quick numbers for the current week: the total number of learning sessions, the completion rate (the percentage of sessions where your child worked through to a conclusion), and the number of days they were active. It's a fast snapshot of engagement at a glance.
What does the "Outcomes" panel mean?
This panel breaks down how sessions ended over your chosen time window (7 or 30 days). "Completed" means your child worked through to a resolution. "Abandoned" means they deliberately moved on — for example, by changing the subject within the same chat before the original question was resolved. "Timed out" means a session was still open but your child didn't return to it within 30 minutes — it's counted as lapsed rather than deliberately abandoned. A high completion rate is a good sign — it indicates your child is sticking with the work rather than giving up. The trend indicator shows whether things are improving or declining compared to the previous period.
What does "Subject activity" show?
This panel shows which subjects your child has been spending time on, ranked by number of sessions. The bar next to each subject gives you a quick visual sense of how much time was spent there relative to others. It's useful for spotting if your child is avoiding certain subjects or focusing heavily on one area.
What are "Struggle signals"?
Tommi tracks when your child is finding something difficult — repeated attempts, hints requested, sessions that don't reach a conclusion. The struggle signal panel shows an overall struggle rate (green is healthy, amber is moderate, red means your child is finding a lot of things hard) and breaks it down by subject so you can see exactly where the difficulty is. This is one of the most useful panels for knowing where extra support might be needed.
What does "Learning consistency" mean?
This panel shows how regularly your child has been using Tommi over the selected time window — how many days they were active out of the total days. The bar chart shows their day-by-day usage pattern. Consistent, regular sessions are generally more effective than occasional intense ones, so this helps you encourage a healthy learning habit.
What is the "Weekly learning summary"?
This gives you a concise written summary of your child's week at a glance: total sessions, completion rate, their most active subject, their overall struggle level, and a consistency rating. It's designed to be the first thing you check each week — a plain-English overview that tells you whether things are going well or if something needs attention.
What are "Top strengths"?
Based on the last 30 days, this panel identifies the subjects where your child is performing most confidently — high success rates and low struggle signals. It's great for recognising what your child is good at and for building on those positives.
What does "Needs attention" mean?
This panel flags the subjects where your child has been struggling most over the last 30 days, based on their struggle rate. It's not a cause for alarm — it's a useful pointer for where a bit of extra encouragement or real-world support (like extra practice or talking to a teacher) might help.
What is "Learning efficiency"?
This panel compares your child's performance this week against the previous week, looking at two measures: how much the completion rate changed (going up is good) and how much the struggle rate changed (going down is good). If both are moving in the right direction, the trend shows as "Improving". This is the panel to watch if you want to track progress over time rather than just a snapshot.
What does "Activity charts" show?
This panel has two visual charts: a bar chart of daily session counts (so you can see which days of the week your child tends to use Tommi) and a breakdown of sessions by subject. It's useful for spotting patterns — for example, whether your child only uses Tommi the night before a test, or whether they're studying consistently across subjects.
